Caring for your trees like no other:
We are dedicated to helping you preserve the investment of your trees and landscaping.

Why hire an arborist?
An arborist is trained to diagnose and treat every ailment that your trees may have. A landscaper may cause damage to your tree because of improper trimming. An arborist will help you protect your investment and ensure your trees will still be around to enjoy years down the road.

Company History

Boyd Haney began his career in arboriculture in the 1930's with the Village of Oak Park. In 1940, Boyd left Oak Park with a vision to provide top quality tree-care to his customers. That year, Boyd and a partner started American Tree Service. Shortly thereafter, Boyd bought out his partner and renamed the company B. Haney & Sons.

From the beginning, B. Haney & Sons was a family affair, Boyd doing the sales and treework, his wife Gladys keeping the books and answering the phones. In the late 1940's their three sons: Jack, Bill and Jim joined the company. After completing their military obligations in the mid 1950's, they began their full-time careers as "tree surgeons" as they were then known.

That was a time of great growth. By the early 1960's, the company had reached forty employees. The 1980's saw the family tradition continue as the third generation of Haney's joined the company.

B. Haney & Sons continues to grow as a fourth generation has begun part time with the company; all the while maintaining Boyd's vision of providing top quality tree care to our customers.

Tree Tips:

Winter Trees covered in Snow - Beautiful but possibly deadly to your trees if not properly cared for.

Winter Tips
for your trees:

The extreme heat and drought of the summer has caused stress for trees and shrunbs. Make sure the ground is well sturated this fall before the ground freezes for the winter. Most trees may look dormant in the winter months, however the roots of these trees are still active. In the winter months, if there is no rain or snow, drought conditions can occur. During these winter droughts, the fine roots of trees in the soil can dry out and be damaged just like in the hot summer months. Make sure there is moisture in the soil through the winter to help reduce the stress on the trees. Look at your trees after heavy snow. The added weight of the snow sticking to the tree can cause branches to break. Be aware of the possible hazards created in the trees after heavy snow.

Pruning trees from mid November to mid March has many benefits over pruning in the summer months:

  • Tree pathogens are dormant during this time
  • Tree branch structure is easier to see without leaves
  • Protection of perennial plantings
  • The cuts from pruning develop callus tissue during the following spring and summer and heal more rapidly
  • Proper pruning increases health and vigor reducing damage from spring storms
